How it plays
Each round takes place on a single greenhouse screen. Stanley moves horizontally along the bottom while Donkey Kong occupies the center and insects descend from the upper area.
Spraying insects pushes them upward; the objective is to drive them off the top of the screen while avoiding contact and falling hazards. Later rounds increase the number, speed, and variety of enemies, creating a progressively tighter timing challenge.
Plan your run
Stay near the middle so Stanley can switch directions quickly, but avoid standing directly beneath Donkey Kong when hazards are falling.
Prioritize insects that are closest to the plants or moving fastest. Short, repeated sprays are easier to aim than holding one position, and advancing enemies should be pushed upward before the screen becomes crowded.
Meet the cast
A greenhouse keeper who uses an insecticide spray to protect his plants and repel Donkey Kong's insects.
The large ape at the center of the greenhouse who releases insects and acts as the stage's main threat.
Before you begin
Use the spray to control enemy position, not merely to score hits.
Watch the upper screen for falling hazards before committing to a long movement.
Treat each round as a positioning challenge; surviving is more important than chasing every insect immediately.
Donkey Kong 3 is a fixed-screen action shooter developed by Nintendo R&D1 and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The player controls Stanley, a greenhouse keeper defending his plants from Donkey Kong and swarms of insects. Rather than jumping across platforms, Stanley uses an insecticide spray to force enemies upward and clear each stage. The game is structured around repeated single-screen rounds, with increasing enemy pressure and changing insect formations. Its quick aiming, limited space, and escalating pace make it closer to an arcade score attack than a conventional platform game. Reception has generally focused on its unusual departure from earlier Donkey Kong games, responsive controls, and demanding difficulty, while some players find its repetitive format less substantial than the series' platforming entries.
