How it plays

How does Donkey Kong Classics play?

Donkey Kong presents a side-view climb through four recurring stage types. Mario must reach Pauline while avoiding barrels, fireballs, springs, and other hazards. He can move across girders, climb ladders, jump, and sometimes use a hammer.

Donkey Kong Jr. also uses fixed single-screen stages. Jr. climbs vines and chains, avoids enemies, and reaches the key at the top to release Donkey Kong. Both games are score-based and become more difficult as stages repeat at higher speeds or with more dangerous timing.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Donkey Kong Classics?

Learn the timing of each fixed stage before taking unnecessary risks. In Donkey Kong, watch barrel trajectories and use ladders deliberately; the hammer is temporary, so do not rely on it for progress.

In Donkey Kong Jr., climb from safe vine positions and wait for enemies to pass before switching sides. Prioritize reaching the goal over collecting every bonus item, especially as the speed increases.
