How it plays
The game is viewed from a side-on perspective. Mario must reach a key and carry it to the exit door, while avoiding hazards and navigating platforms, ladders, ropes, springs, and switches. Donkey Kong appears in set-piece encounters and chase sequences.
Stages become progressively more intricate. Mario can collect objects, manipulate the environment, and use special movement techniques to solve routes. The adventure includes several worlds with multiple stages, followed by boss or chase challenges.
Plan your run
Study the whole route before moving the key. Many stages are easier when Mario first activates switches, clears hazards, or positions objects before picking up the key.
Use safe platforms to control your timing, and remember that carrying the key changes how you approach jumps and obstacles. Revisit earlier areas mentally when a later section introduces a familiar object in a new way.

Donkey Kong is a puzzle-platform game developed by Nintendo R&D1 and published by Nintendo for Game Boy. It begins like the classic arcade game, with Mario pursuing Donkey Kong to rescue Pauline, but develops into a much larger adventure after the opening stages. Each level combines traditional platforming with switches, moving platforms, ladders, ropes, hazards, and objects that Mario can carry or throw. Its compact monochrome presentation disguises considerable mechanical depth. The game was widely praised for its inventive level design, responsive controls, and successful adaptation of a familiar arcade property into an original handheld experience.
