Kunimasa (くに政)
The player character, a historical-period version of Kunio. He travels across Japan and fights the gangs and challengers blocking his path.
How it plays
The game uses a side-view perspective and presents a connected map of towns, roads, and combat locations. The main objective is to move between destinations, defeat enemy groups, complete encounters, and advance the story.
Players control Kunimasa in real-time fights, using normal attacks, grabs, throws, jumps, weapons, and special moves. Money earned from battles can be spent in shops, while equipment and character statistics affect performance. Progression comes from exploring the map, improving the party, and selecting activities or routes before the next major confrontation.
Plan your run
Learn the timing of grabs and throws instead of relying only on repeated punches. Throws are especially useful for controlling groups and creating space.
Spend money on useful equipment and upgrades, but keep enough cash for recovery and other important purchases. Explore available routes and shops before committing to difficult fights, and practice special techniques until their ranges and openings are familiar.
Meet the cast

Kunimasa's companion and a historical-period counterpart of a familiar Kunio-kun ally. He supports the adventure and appears in its comic drama.
Before you begin
Use throws to remove one enemy from a crowd and avoid being surrounded.
Check shops regularly; equipment and growth make later encounters more manageable.
Experiment with special techniques and weapons because different enemies punish the same attack pattern differently.
Downtown Special: Kunio-kun's Historical Period Drama! Everyone Gather! is a Japanese side-scrolling beat 'em up with action-RPG elements, developed and published by Technōs Japan for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991. It recasts Kunio-kun characters as brawlers in a comic Edo-period adventure, with Kunimasa traveling through feudal Japan and taking on gangs, outlaws, and rival fighters. Battles combine punches, kicks, throws, jumping attacks, and learned special techniques. A world map, shops, equipment, money, and character growth give the campaign more structure than a straightforward arcade beat 'em up. The game was well regarded in Japan for its humor, generous content, and inventive customization, although its Japanese-only release limited recognition outside Japan.
