How it plays

How does Dragon Quest play?

Exploration is viewed from an overhead perspective, while battles switch to a first-person command interface. The hero moves across the overworld, enters towns and dungeons, speaks with residents, searches specific locations, and fights monsters in random encounters.

The main objectives are to improve the hero's level and equipment, obtain key items, rescue Princess Gwaelin, and reach the Dragonlord's stronghold. Gold earned in battle purchases weapons, armor, and shields; experience points raise statistics and unlock spells. The game is primarily a single-player adventure with a linear central quest and optional exploration.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Dragon Quest?

  • Upgrade weapons and armor whenever the next town makes them available; equipment improvements are usually more important than saving gold.
  • Fight near a town while building levels so the hero can restore HP and MP safely.
  • Keep herbs for emergencies and use Heal or Healmore before a battle becomes dangerous.
  • Map caves carefully and conserve resources; returning to town is often safer than pressing forward with low HP or MP.
