How it plays

How does Dragon Warrior II play?

Explore an overhead world, speak with townspeople, search important locations, and collect clues that reveal the next destination. Random encounters switch to a first-person battle screen where the party can attack, cast spells, use items, defend, or flee.

The adventure begins with one hero and gradually adds two companions. Experience points raise levels, while weapons, armor, shields, and spells improve combat capability. New regions open through key items, a ship, and other story-driven discoveries. The game has no separate battle mode or character-creation system.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Dragon Warrior II?

Talk to residents repeatedly and search suspicious tiles; many progression clues depend on information from towns rather than obvious map markers.

Keep several antidotes, keys, and healing items available, and return to town whenever a new area begins producing frequent defeats. The ship opens a large portion of the map, so use landmarks and notes to avoid losing track of destinations.

The final regions are substantially harder than earlier areas. Grind near a safe town, upgrade equipment for every party member, and conserve the princess's strongest spells for dangerous encounters and bosses.

A versatile companion who uses weapons and a broad selection of attack, support, and recovery spells.

3

Princess of Moonbrooke

A powerful spellcaster whose magic greatly expands the party's options, despite her weaker physical defenses.

4

The principal antagonist, a sorcerer who commands a destructive religious cult.

5

Malroth

A destructive deity associated with Hargon and the game's climactic confrontation.

Before you begin

What should you know before playing?

  1. 1

Save money for upgrades, but keep enough gold for healing and travel supplies.

  2. 2

Use the princess's offensive magic carefully; her spell points are limited during long dungeon trips.

  3. 3

Record town clues and shrine locations because the game provides little navigation assistance.
