How it plays
The player explores an overhead world, visits towns, speaks with residents, buys equipment, and searches dungeons for key items. Random encounters switch to a first-person command battle screen.
Dragon Warrior I uses one hero, while Dragon Warrior II adds a party and broader party-management decisions. Winning battles grants experience and gold; levels improve attributes, and equipment changes combat effectiveness. Story progress depends on locating items, defeating bosses, and opening new areas.
Plan your run
Talk to residents repeatedly and record clues about keys, shrines, bosses, and hidden routes. Buy stronger weapons and armor before pushing into unfamiliar regions.
In Dragon Warrior II, protect the spell-focused Princess of Moonbrooke and keep healing supplies available. Grind near safe towns when enemies begin defeating the party quickly, and save before major dungeon expeditions.

Dragon Warrior I & II is a turn-based Japanese role-playing game compilation developed by Chunsoft and published by Enix for the Game Boy Color. It combines two foundational fantasy adventures: a lone hero’s quest to defeat the Dragonlord and a larger party’s campaign against the cult of Hargon and the demon Malroth. Both episodes use overhead exploration, menu-driven battles, towns, dungeons, equipment, experience levels, and treasure hunting. The portable versions add visual and interface improvements over the original releases while retaining their deliberate pacing and traditional structure. The compilation was well received as a convenient, accessible adaptation of two historically important console RPGs.
