How it plays

How does Dragon Warrior IV play?

The adventure begins with five chapters, each following different protagonists and objectives. Players travel across an overhead world, enter towns and dungeons, speak with residents, collect equipment, and fight monsters in turn-based battles. Random encounters occur while exploring the field and dungeon areas.

The fifth chapter reunites the principal characters around the Hero. Party members have different abilities, and the player can arrange the active group, equip weapons and armor, cast spells, use items, and issue combat commands. The NES version includes an AI-oriented party system for companions, while the Hero remains directly controlled. Progress comes from gaining levels, finding equipment, completing story objectives, and defeating major bosses.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Dragon Warrior IV?

Keep several characters equipped even when they are not currently active, because the chapter structure changes which party members are available. Save money for reliable weapons and armor, and check new towns carefully for upgrades, healing services, and story information.

In battle, protect fragile spellcasters and use the party’s different roles deliberately. Healing magic and status recovery become increasingly important in longer dungeons. Before major bosses, carry enough healing items, learn the enemy’s attack patterns through repeated attempts, and maintain a balanced party rather than relying only on physical damage.
