How it plays

How does Dragon Warrior play?

The hero explores towns, castles, caves, and wilderness from a top-down view. Talk, search, shop, rest, and gather information to determine where to go next. Random encounters begin turn-based battles presented from a first-person viewpoint.

Combat uses commands such as fight, cast spells, use items, or run. Victory grants experience and gold; experience raises the hero's level, while gold purchases stronger weapons, armor, and shields. The adventure is a single-player progression through key items, dungeons, and increasingly dangerous regions leading to the Dragonlord.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Dragon Warrior?

Buy a stronger weapon and shield as soon as the budget allows, and keep enough gold for armor and healing supplies. Fight near a town until the hero can reliably survive several encounters before pushing into a new region.

Use the spell list deliberately: healing and defensive magic reduce the risk of long expeditions, while dungeon navigation rewards carrying torches and returning to town before resources run out. Record clues from townspeople and use the princess's rescued location and key items to identify the next objective.

Before you begin

What should you know before playing?

  1. 1

Save at the king before difficult exploration; defeat causes a gold penalty and returns the hero to the castle.

  2. 2

Search thoroughly around towns and landmarks when a clue suggests a hidden item or passage.

  3. 3

Grinding is expected, but fighting close to a recovery point is safer than entering a dungeon under-leveled.
