Firion
A young survivor of the Imperial invasion and one of the main protagonists.
How it plays
The game uses a top-down exploration perspective and turn-based battles. Players travel between towns, dungeons, and world-map locations, speak with allies, gather information, and use key terms to advance the story.
Combat requires selecting actions for the party before each turn. Characters improve individual weapon and spell proficiency through use, while equipment, attributes, and magic determine their effectiveness. The party changes during the adventure as temporary allies join and leave.
Plan your run
Build each character around a small number of weapons and spells instead of repeatedly training everything. Use equipment that improves survivability, and keep restorative magic available before entering long dungeons.
Pay attention to the game's key-term system. Important words can be learned from characters and selected in later conversations, often revealing the next objective. Save frequently, especially before major story events and difficult boss encounters.

Final Fantasy II is a Japanese role-playing game developed and published by Square for the WonderSwan Color. It follows four young survivors whose homeland has been devastated by the invading forces of the Emperor of Paramekia. Rather than using fixed experience levels, the game develops characters through repeated use of weapons, magic, and attributes, while story keywords support important conversations. The WonderSwan version is a remake of the original 1988 release, with updated graphics, sound, and interface elements. Its unusual progression system and more dramatic narrative received attention from role-playing game enthusiasts, although its sometimes opaque mechanics remain divisive.
