How it plays

How does Final Fantasy II play?

The game uses a top-down exploration perspective and turn-based battles. Players travel between towns, dungeons, and world-map locations, speak with allies, gather information, and use key terms to advance the story.

Combat requires selecting actions for the party before each turn. Characters improve individual weapon and spell proficiency through use, while equipment, attributes, and magic determine their effectiveness. The party changes during the adventure as temporary allies join and leave.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Final Fantasy II?

Build each character around a small number of weapons and spells instead of repeatedly training everything. Use equipment that improves survivability, and keep restorative magic available before entering long dungeons.

Pay attention to the game's key-term system. Important words can be learned from characters and selected in later conversations, often revealing the next objective. Save frequently, especially before major story events and difficult boss encounters.

Before you begin

What should you know before playing?

  1. 1

Use a balanced weapon and spell plan for each character to avoid spreading proficiency too thin.

  2. 2

Search towns and speak with NPCs after major story events; new information often unlocks progression.

  3. 3

Carry healing items and status-recovery magic because dungeons can be long and demanding.
