How it plays

How does Final Fantasy VI play?

Players explore an overhead world map, towns, forests, caves, ruins, and other areas. Battles use a turn-based Active Time Battle system: each character waits for an individual time gauge, then selects commands such as Fight, Magic, Item, or a character-specific ability.

The first half follows a mostly directed sequence, while the later World of Ruin opens into a more flexible search for allies and objectives. Characters gain levels and learn magic through Espers, while equipment, relics, party composition, and special commands shape combat.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Final Fantasy VI?

Build flexible parties rather than relying on one fixed team. Espers determine which characters learn spells and can provide useful level-up bonuses, so assign them with a plan instead of equipping them randomly.

Keep restorative magic, status recovery, and elemental options available. In the World of Ruin, recruit optional characters and explore side areas before the final dungeon; the extra equipment, spells, and abilities make the endgame much easier.
