How it plays
The adventure is viewed from an overhead perspective during exploration. Players travel across towns, dungeons, forests, oceans, and the world map, speaking with residents, collecting equipment, solving environmental obstacles, and advancing the story.
Combat uses an active-time battle system. Each party member can attack, defend, use items, cast magic, or perform a special command, while enemies continue to act as time gauges fill. Party membership changes through the story, and progression comes from experience levels, equipment upgrades, new abilities, and major plot events.
Plan your run
Upgrade equipment whenever a new town offers better weapons, armor, or defensive accessories. Keep several healing items available, because dungeons can be long and random encounters are frequent.
Exploit enemy weaknesses with elemental magic and status effects, but do not neglect physical attacks. Save before major bosses, learn their attack patterns, and adjust party commands when a character temporarily leaves or joins.
Use the back row for characters who mainly cast spells or use ranged weapons. Cure status ailments promptly, and reserve limited high-level magic for difficult encounters and bosses.

Editorial context
A historically important Final Fantasy with a strong character-focused story and classic active-time combat.
The PlayStation edition is convenient and cinematic, but its loading pauses are more noticeable than in later remakes.
Final Fantasy Chronicles: Final Fantasy IV is Square’s PlayStation presentation of the classic 16-bit role-playing game Final Fantasy IV. It follows Cecil Harvey, a dark knight whose service to the kingdom of Baron leads him into a conflict involving crystals, ancient powers, and the fate of the world. The game combines story-driven exploration, turn-based combat, party management, and a large fantasy adventure. This edition preserves the Super Famicom-era design while adding the PlayStation version’s opening sequence, translation, and cinematic presentation. Critics and players generally regard Final Fantasy IV as an important early console RPG, especially for its dramatic character arc and unusually prominent narrative, although the PlayStation loading times were often criticized.
