How it plays
The party travels across an overworld from an overhead perspective, entering towns, castles, caves, forests, and other areas. Progress depends on speaking with characters, acquiring key information, learning keywords, finding equipment, and defeating bosses.
Battles are turn-based and menu-driven. Each character can attack, defend, use magic, use an item, or perform another available command. Party members gain proficiency with weapons and spells through use rather than through conventional experience levels.
The story adds and removes temporary party members as the rebellion advances. The final objective is to defeat the Emperor and end the Empire’s conquest.
Plan your run
Build characters around the weapons and spells they actually use. Repeated use improves proficiency, so changing equipment constantly can slow development.

Final Fantasy II is a turn-based role-playing game developed and published by Square for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It follows four young survivors drawn into a rebellion against the invading Empire, combining a large fantasy adventure with a story about war, sacrifice, and resistance. Unlike its predecessor, the game does not use fixed experience levels. Characters improve specific abilities through use, while weapons, spells, and equipment shape their roles in battle. Players explore towns, dungeons, forests, and waterways from an overhead perspective, then fight enemies in menu-driven battles. The Japanese release was commercially successful and influential, although its unusual progression system received mixed reactions. It became better regarded over time and established ideas that would recur throughout the Final Fantasy series.
