How it plays
The game uses a top-down world map and first-person-style battle scenes. Players travel between settlements and dungeons, speak with characters, gather information, and use key items or learned terms to advance the story.
Combat is turn-based. Each party member can attack, defend, cast magic, use an item, or attempt to flee. Characters improve individual weapon and spell proficiencies through use, while maximum HP and other attributes can change according to battle behavior. The party and available allies change throughout the campaign.
Plan your run
Build weapon skills by using the weapons you intend to keep, rather than spreading every character across all weapon types. Raise a small selection of reliable spells and use them regularly so their proficiency does not lag behind.
Search towns thoroughly for equipment, healing, and key terms. Save often before major dungeons, and carry teleportation or escape options when available. Since party members join and leave, avoid investing all rare equipment in temporary allies.

Before you begin
Use the game's keyword system carefully; important terms often unlock dialogue or progression.
Do not treat HP loss as the only route to growth; deliberate weapon and spell use is more dependable.
The game has no universally accepted built-in cheat code for the NES version.
Final Fantasy II is a fantasy role-playing game developed and published by Square for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It follows four youths drawn into a rebellion against the expanding Empire after their homeland is attacked. Unlike its predecessor, the game uses named protagonists, a more developed story, and a skill-growth system based on how characters act in battle. Players explore towns, dungeons, and a large world map while recruiting temporary allies. The Japanese release was recognized for its ambitious narrative and experimental mechanics, although its progression system remains controversial because repeated actions determine character growth. This version was not originally released in North America, where the later Super NES game Final Fantasy IV was marketed as Final Fantasy II.
