How it plays
Players guide a party through a largely linear world map and story campaign. Most battles are turn-based encounters on isometric maps, with movement, height, facing, terrain, and attack range affecting the outcome.
Characters gain experience and Job Points, unlock new jobs, equip weapons and armor, and combine learned abilities across classes. Optional battles and errands provide additional progression, while story battles introduce new objectives and increasingly complex enemy formations.
Plan your run
Use the terrain and turn order before committing to attacks. High ground improves many ranged actions, while narrow passages can limit enemy movement.
Build a small core of dependable characters, but keep several jobs developing so the party can answer different threats. Save Job Points for useful support and reaction abilities, and check enemy equipment before finishing a battle when stealing is practical.

Keep a dedicated healer or restorative support ability available in difficult story battles.
Read ability descriptions carefully: many actions depend on vertical range, charging time, or Faith.
Final Fantasy Tactics is a tactical role-playing game developed and published by Square for the original PlayStation. Set in the war-torn kingdom of Ivalice, it follows Ramza Beoulve as he becomes involved in a political conflict shaped by class divisions, religion, and ancient powers. Battles take place on compact three-dimensional maps, where positioning, elevation, equipment, and job abilities matter as much as raw statistics. Its job system allows characters to learn and combine abilities from many professions. The game was widely praised for its deep combat, unusually mature story, and distinctive presentation, and it became one of the most respected strategy RPGs of its era.
