How it plays

How does FINAL FANTASY VIII play?

The game uses a third-person perspective for field exploration, towns, dungeons, and the world map. Players guide Squall and his party, investigate story locations, recruit temporary allies, and complete missions across a largely linear narrative.

Battles are turn-based. Characters attack, use magic, summon Guardian Forces, draw spells from enemies, use items, and activate Limit Breaks. Junctioning Guardian Forces and stocked magic changes statistics and elemental or status defenses. Experience raises character levels, while Guardian Forces learn abilities and support further customization.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play FINAL FANTASY VIII?

Junction magic to attributes that support each character’s role, and keep a strong stock of spells rather than casting every spell immediately. Draw useful magic from enemies and refine items through Guardian Force abilities.

Use elemental and status junctions when entering unfamiliar areas. Learn compatible Guardian Force abilities early, save before major story sequences, and use Limit Breaks when a character’s health is low. Exploring optional areas can provide powerful Guardian Forces and equipment.
