How it plays

How does Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem play?

Battles use an overhead grid. Players move allied units, attack enemies, use items and staves, capture or defend locations, and complete chapter-specific objectives. Terrain affects movement and defense, while weapons follow a triangle of advantages between swords, lances, and axes.

The campaign is divided into chapters, with units gaining experience and changing class through special items. Defeated characters usually die permanently, so positioning, recruitment, equipment, and careful use of limited resources are central to progression. The cartridge includes Book 1, a remake of the first game, and Book 2, its sequel.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem?

Protect fragile units behind durable front-line fighters, and check enemy attack ranges before ending each turn.

Recruitment is often triggered by talking with a specific character, so avoid attacking unfamiliar units until you have checked whether a playable character can approach them. Preserve effective weapons, healing staves, and promotion items for difficult chapters.
