Firepower 2000 is viewed from above in a vertically scrolling perspective. Players guide combat vehicles through a sequence of stages, destroy ground and airborne targets, collect power-ups, and survive environmental hazards while advancing toward end-of-stage bosses.

The main objective is continuous forward progress. Players can move in eight directions and fire while avoiding projectiles and enemies. Two-player co-operative play increases the firepower but also makes the battlefield busier. Weapon upgrades and limited lives or continues provide the main progression mechanics.

Keep moving in broad patterns rather than staying near one edge of the screen. Destroy dangerous projectiles and fast enemies first, and learn the timing of boss attacks before committing to aggressive fire.

In two-player games, divide attention across opposite sides of the screen and avoid crossing paths. Save stronger weapons for dense formations and bosses instead of spending them on isolated targets.
