How it plays
The stage is presented in a free-roaming 3D platformer view, allowing the player to explore freely between connected sub-areas.
Players navigate stone platforms above lava, enter the central structure to climb interior rooms, and cross a narrow bridge that circles the outside wall. A boss fight against the Big Bob-omb takes place at the top.
Progression comes from collecting Power Stars by completing specific tasks such as reaching hidden platforms, defeating enemies, breaking the Chain Chomp's chain, and performing the cannonless course star.

Editorial context
A highlight of the game's later courses with great vertical design.
Short but tense thanks to the lava hazard and the Big Bob-omb battle.
"Flat" Lethal Lava Land is the eighth course in Super Mario 64. It is set inside a fiery cavern dominated by pools of molten lava, suspended platforms, and a giant stone structure. The level is reached through the basement of the castle after collecting enough stars. It challenges Mario with careful platforming across narrow surfaces and vertical climbs over a deadly floor. The course is remembered for its tense atmosphere, its iconic Big Bob-omb on the summit, and its ties to the Japanese version's mysterious 30th star. Reception has remained positive among fans for its level design and memorable encounters.
