How it plays
Front Mission uses an overhead, grid-based tactical perspective. The objective is usually to defeat enemy units, protect an important target, or reach a designated area. Players move wanzers across terrain, select weapons, attack specific body parts, and use items or skills when available.
The campaign is divided into story missions with preparation and intermission sections between battles. Pilots gain experience, machines can be rebuilt from separate body, arm, leg, and backpack parts, and different weapons support different ranges and attack styles. Arena fights and shops provide additional ways to earn money and improve equipment.
Plan your run
Use terrain and distance to control engagements rather than advancing every unit at once. Focus fire on one enemy wanzer, and damage legs when reducing mobility is more useful than immediately destroying the body.
Keep weapons and pilot skills suited to their roles. Short weapons are strong at close range, rifles cover medium distance, and launchers can pressure groups from farther away. Visit shops and the arena between missions, but avoid spending all money on one machine; a balanced squad is more reliable.

Front Mission is a turn-based tactical role-playing game developed by G-Craft and published by Square for the Super Famicom. It combines a serious military story with detailed customization of humanoid combat machines called wanzers. The campaign follows Royd Clive, a former U.S.N. soldier drawn into a conflict on Huffman Island, where battlefield events gradually reveal a wider political conspiracy. Battles take place on grid-based maps and require careful positioning, weapon selection, and management of mech parts. Between missions, players can upgrade machines, recruit pilots, and prepare equipment. The game was well regarded in Japan for its mature narrative, strategic combat, and unusually detailed mecha systems, although it was not officially released in North America or Europe on the SNES.
