How it plays
The player views the action from a fixed frontal perspective. Enemy formations enter from above, perform attack patterns, and return to formation; the objective is to clear each stage while preserving the ship.
Stages contain standard waves, bonus opportunities, power-up events, and larger encounters. A second ship can sometimes be combined with the player's craft, increasing firepower but also increasing the target's size. Players progress through a sequence of increasingly difficult stages, with score bonuses rewarding accuracy and survival.
Plan your run
Stay near the lower portion of the screen, but keep moving horizontally so diving enemies and aimed shots cannot easily corner the ship.
Before you begin
Prioritize enemies that leave the formation and attack directly.
A wider firing formation is powerful, but it is harder to maneuver safely.
Alternating two-player play is useful for comparing routes and scores.
Galaga '90 is a fixed-screen arcade shoot 'em up developed and published by Namco for the PC Engine. It is the Western release of Galaga '88, a sequel that updates the series' alien-formation battles with more varied enemy patterns, power-ups, and stage routes. The player controls a small spacecraft, shooting waves of descending aliens while avoiding projectiles and collisions. Its play style is direct and score-focused, but later stages add more demanding formations and boss encounters. The game was well received for preserving Galaga's instantly readable design while providing a substantial technical and content upgrade for home hardware. Its bright presentation, responsive controls, and two-player alternating mode made it a notable PC Engine arcade conversion.
