How it plays
How does Gemfire play?
The game uses a top-down regional map divided into provinces and castles. On each turn, the player selects commands for rulers and officers, then manages taxation, food, troops, construction, recruitment, diplomacy, and attacks.
Battles are resolved on separate tactical maps. Players position units, issue movement and attack orders, and use terrain and officer abilities to defeat opposing forces. A campaign progresses as the player captures enemy castles and eventually unifies Ishmeria; different rulers create different strategic openings.

What is the best way to play Gemfire?
Secure food and income before expanding. A large army is difficult to maintain if a ruler’s provinces cannot supply it.
Recruit capable officers, garrison newly conquered castles, and avoid fighting on several fronts at once. Diplomacy can protect a vulnerable border while resources are directed toward the strongest nearby rival.
Before you begin
What should you know before playing?
- 1
Develop the economy before maintaining a large standing army.
- 2
Use diplomacy to reduce the number of active fronts.
- 3
Station reliable officers in conquered castles to limit rebellions and counterattacks.
