How it plays
The game is viewed from a side-scrolling perspective. Players move through linear stages, defeat groups of enemies, collect magic, and advance toward Death Adder's stronghold.
Basic attacks, jumping, throws, directional strikes, and magic form the core combat system. Certain stages include rideable creatures that change the player's attack options. The adventure supports one or two players, with each player selecting one of three warriors.
Magic power is collected from small thieves and can be spent to cast character-specific spells. Stages end with stronger enemies or bosses, and the campaign progresses through a fixed sequence of locations.
Plan your run
Keep enemies in front of the character and use short attack sequences instead of repeatedly swinging while surrounded. Jump attacks and throws are useful for breaking up groups, while careful spacing helps avoid simultaneous strikes from opposite sides.
Collect magic whenever it appears, but save enough for bosses. Mountable creatures can deal heavy damage, yet they are vulnerable to focused attacks and may be lost quickly.
In two-player games, separate enemy targets when possible. Avoid overlapping attacks, since both players can be caught by the same crowd-control pressure.

Golden Axe is a side-scrolling fantasy beat 'em up released for the PC Engine CD in 1990. The game follows a small group of warriors seeking to stop the tyrant Death Adder, whose army has seized the Golden Axe and threatened their homeland. Players choose between a sword-wielding barbarian, a powerful Amazon, and a dwarf skilled with an axe. The PC Engine CD version adapts Sega's arcade design for home play, retaining stage-based combat, magic attacks, mounted creatures, and cooperative play. Golden Axe was recognized for its readable combat, distinctive fantasy setting, and memorable character designs, although home versions varied in audiovisual quality and arcade fidelity.
