How it plays
The game uses a side-view perspective and advances through a sequence of combat stages. Players move horizontally, defeat groups of enemies, collect magic potions, and occasionally ride creatures such as dragons or the chicken-legged Chickenleg.
The three selectable heroes have different weapon ranges and magic levels. Attacks, jumps, directional movement, and attack combinations form the core combat system. A second player can join in cooperative play, and the party eventually faces Death Adder in the final stage.
Plan your run
Keep enemies in front of the hero whenever possible, and use normal attacks to control crowds before committing to a jump attack. Avoid being surrounded, since enemies can strike from both sides and punish repeated attacks.
Collect magic potions from the small potion carriers and save stronger spells for dense groups or bosses. In two-player mode, spread out slightly so both heroes can attack without constantly interrupting each other, but regroup when enemies begin flanking the party.
Meet the cast
A barbarian warrior who uses a sword and balances attack range, speed, and magic.
An Amazon warrior with powerful magic and agile combat, but comparatively limited physical endurance.
A dwarf armed with an axe; he has strong physical attacks and a different magic profile from the other heroes.
The tyrant and principal antagonist, who commands the invading forces and guards the Golden Axe.
Before you begin
Use the edge of the screen to limit the directions from which enemies can approach.
Save full magic meters for large enemy groups or difficult boss encounters.
Mounted creatures can provide a major advantage, so protect them rather than dismounting immediately.
Golden Axe is a side-scrolling fantasy beat 'em up developed by Sega AM1 and published by Sega for the Sega 32X in 1994. It is a console version of the influential 1989 arcade game, placing three heroic warriors against the tyrant Death Adder and his armies. Players choose a barbarian, an Amazon, or a dwarf, each with different reach, speed, and magic strength. The campaign supports solo play and cooperative two-player action, with mounted creatures and screen-clearing spells adding variety to straightforward melee combat. The 32X version preserves the arcade structure while presenting enhanced audiovisual capabilities for Sega's add-on hardware. Reception recognized its strong co-op and faithful action, although the game remained fundamentally an older arcade design rather than a major redesign.
