Kunio
One of the series’ signature characters, appearing in the board-game events.
How it plays
The game presents a top-down view of each player’s vertical puzzle field. Falling oden pieces must be positioned and arranged to form matching groups, clear space, and prevent the field from reaching its limit.
Play centers on competitive matches rather than a conventional adventure map. Clearing pieces can create attacks or garbage for the opposing side, so progression depends on building chains, managing the rising stack, and reacting quickly to the opponent’s field. The exact available modes depend on the selected game setup.
Plan your run
Prioritize keeping the center of the field open. A low, stable stack gives more time to recognize the next pieces and makes it easier to recover from an unexpected attack.
Avoid clearing every possible match immediately when a larger chain can be prepared safely. In versus play, watch the opponent’s field as well as your own, since a small but well-timed clear can be more valuable than a risky setup.
Meet the cast
One of the series’ signature characters, appearing in the board-game events.
Kunio’s well-known ally and rival, also featured as a character in the game.
Before you begin
Keep the stack low and preserve room for future pieces.
Plan chains without allowing the sides of the field to become unusably high.
Kunio no Oden is a Japanese Super Famicom puzzle game developed and published by Technos Japan Corp. in 1994. It uses the Kunio-kun cast in a falling-block competition built around colorful oden ingredients rather than conventional geometric tiles. Players arrange pieces in a compact playfield, create matches, and send pressure to an opponent. The presentation gives the game a lighthearted arcade character, while the competitive rules reward fast decisions and careful planning. It received limited exposure outside Japan and remains a relatively obscure entry in the Kunio-kun catalog, but it is notable for combining the series’ humor with a focused versus-puzzle format.
