How it plays
Players move through towns, fields, caves, and enemy-filled side-scrolling stages while searching for the route to each area’s boss. Goemon attacks with his pipe, jumps across hazards, collects money, and obtains temporary or permanent power-ups. Ebisumaru uses his own weapon and can be controlled by a second player.
The game alternates between exploration and linear action stages. Towns contain shops, minigames, information, and story events, while boss battles test movement and attack timing. Progress is made by clearing regions, acquiring useful items, and defeating their bosses.
Plan your run
Explore towns before leaving, since shops and minigames can provide health, lives, money, and useful equipment. Break suspicious objects and inspect side paths for hidden items.
In combat, keep moving and attack enemies from a safe distance when possible. Save stronger weapons or power-ups for bosses, learn their attack patterns, and avoid rushing into crowded areas.

Editorial context
A charming SNES action game with unusually broad variety, strong co-op play, and a memorable sense of humor.
The changing viewpoints and minigames are distinctive, though the structure can feel less focused than a conventional platformer.
The Legend of the Mystical Ninja is a colorful action-adventure game developed and published by Konami for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It follows the ninja thief Goemon and his partner Ebisumaru as they travel through a fanciful version of feudal Japan to rescue Princess Yukihime. The game mixes side-scrolling platforming, close-range combat, overhead exploration, shops, and optional diversions. A second player can join as Ebisumaru, making cooperation a central part of the experience. Its bright presentation, energetic music, comic tone, and varied structure earned it a strong reputation among SNES players, although some sections are notably unconventional compared with standard platformers.
