How it plays
The game uses a side-view perspective. Lemmings enter from an entrance and continue walking unless the player changes their behavior or path. The objective is to guide a required percentage of them to the exit while minimizing casualties.
The player selects abilities for individual lemmings, including climber, floater, bomber, blocker, builder, basher, miner, and digger. Levels are arranged across increasing difficulty classes, with limited skills, time limits, hazards, traps, and multiple routes creating the main challenge.
The SNES version is primarily a single-player experience. Progress depends on completing stages and meeting their rescue requirements; later puzzles demand precise timing and efficient use of every available ability.
Plan your run
Study the whole route before assigning a skill. A blocker can redirect a crowd, but it may also create an obstacle that must later be removed.
Reserve builders, miners, and bashers for essential sections, and check the remaining skill count before committing. When possible, create a safe landing or alternate route before releasing more lemmings.
Use the pause function to inspect timing and plan several actions ahead. Meeting the required rescue percentage is usually more important than saving every lemming.
Meet the cast
The small green-haired creatures you must guide to safety by giving them the right skills.
Before you begin
Pause before difficult timing sequences and count the lemmings entering each hazard.
Use blockers to organize groups, then free them with a bomber or by routing the crowd around them when the level permits.
Do not spend the last builder, miner, or basher until the exit route is confirmed.
Lemmings is a puzzle-strategy game developed by DMA Design and published by Psygnosis for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The player guides large groups of automatically walking lemmings through dangerous stages by assigning limited abilities such as digging, building, climbing, blocking, and floating. Each level combines timing, route planning, and careful resource management rather than direct character control. The SNES version adapts the distinctive mouse-oriented concept to a controller and includes a broad selection of progressively harder puzzles. Lemmings was widely praised for its original design, accessible premise, and demanding later stages, helping establish the franchise as a major puzzle series of the early 1990s.
