How it plays
How does Madden NFL '97 play?
Games are played from a scrolling field view. Before each snap, select an offensive or defensive play, then use the directional pad to position the controlled player and execute the play after the snap.
Offense centers on handing off, passing to eligible receivers, blocking, and advancing the ball through four downs. Defense requires switching among players, pursuing the ball carrier, covering receivers, and making tackles. Drives are governed by downs, field position, possession changes, punts, field goals, and touchdowns.
Plan your run
What is the best way to play Madden NFL '97?
- Use short passes and inside runs to stay ahead of the down-and-distance marker; forcing deep throws gives the secondary more time to recover.
- On defense, switch to the defender nearest the ball rather than chasing with a lineman after the play has escaped the line.
- Reserve timeouts for clock management near halftime and the end of the fourth quarter, especially when attempting a field goal or protecting a narrow lead.
Before you begin
What should you know before playing?
- 1
Learn the playbook names before relying on audibles; the best call depends on down, distance, and field position.
- 2
Kickoffs, punts, and field goals can decide close games, so avoid treating every possession as a passing opportunity.
