How it plays
The game uses a third-person perspective behind the golfer, with an overhead course map available for planning. The main objective is to complete 18-hole rounds in as few strokes as possible while accounting for terrain, wind, hazards, and lie conditions.
Players select a club, aim the shot, choose power, and time the swing. Modes include stroke play, tournaments, ring shot challenges, speed golf, mini-golf, and multiplayer competitions. Progression comes through tournament victories and challenge completion, which can unlock additional golfers and courses.
Plan your run
Study the wind and landing area before choosing a club. A shot that reaches the green is not always best if it leaves a difficult putt or risks a bunker.
Use controlled power near hazards, and practice putting speed on slopes. In tournaments, consistency is usually more valuable than attempting maximum-distance shots on every hole.

Mario Golf is a sports game developed by Camelot Software Planning and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64. It combines conventional golf rules with the characters, courses, and presentation of the Mario universe. Players choose a golfer, study each hole, select a club, and control the shot through a timing-based swing meter. Alongside standard stroke play, the game includes competitive tournaments, training, match play, and character-focused challenges. Its approachable controls were balanced by demanding course layouts and shot planning. Critics generally praised its depth, responsive mechanics, colorful presentation, and strong multiplayer support, making it one of the Nintendo 64's most respected sports games.
