How it plays
Players steer from a behind-the-kart perspective and race through themed circuits. Grand Prix is organized into four cups, each containing four tracks, with engine classes that affect speed and handling. Finishing position determines points across a cup.
Item boxes provide offensive, defensive, and movement-changing items. Versus mode allows selected races outside a cup, Time Trials focuses on lap and course records, and Battle mode places players in arenas where balloons represent remaining hits. Winning cups unlocks higher engine classes and additional content.
Plan your run
Learn each circuit's braking points before relying on items. Light drivers recover quickly after collisions, while heavy drivers can push lighter opponents aside but lose more time when stopped.
Save defensive items when approaching narrow sections or the final lap. In Grand Prix, consistent finishes are often more valuable than risky attempts to win every race.

Mario Kart 64 is a kart-racing game developed by Nintendo EAD and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64. It combines arcade racing with characters, items, and track themes from the Super Mario universe. Players compete across courses filled with jumps, hazards, shortcuts, and item boxes, while weapons can change the order at any moment. The game supports Grand Prix, Time Trials, Versus, and Battle modes, with split-screen multiplayer for up to four players. Its bright presentation, accessible controls, and chaotic multiplayer made it one of the Nintendo 64's most popular party and racing games. It was also recognized for establishing several conventions that became central to later Mario Kart titles.
