How it plays

How does Mega Man X3 play?

Players guide X through eight stages that can be completed in any order. Each stage contains hazards, enemies, secrets, a boss, and a weapon gained from that boss.

X runs, jumps, climbs walls, charges the X-Buster, dashes, and uses special weapons. Armor capsules, heart tanks, sub-tanks, and enhancement chips improve exploration and survivability. Zero can be summoned for restricted sections, but cannot normally fight stage bosses.

Defeating bosses changes later encounters involving Bit, Byte, and Vile. A final sequence leads to Dr. Doppler's laboratory and the concluding battles.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Mega Man X3?

Explore stages after gaining new weapons rather than rushing directly to the bosses. Charge shots are useful against ordinary enemies, while boss weaknesses can make several fights much safer.

Search walls, ceilings, and alternate routes for heart tanks, sub-tanks, armor capsules, and enhancement chips. Use the stage select screen to revisit areas after obtaining new abilities.

Protect Zero when he appears, and pay attention to Bit, Byte, and Vile encounters. Some choices influence which later encounters and endings are available.
