How it plays
The game uses a first-person view for movement through towns, wilderness, and dungeons. The party travels one step or turn at a time, searches locations, gathers information, and fights hostile groups in menu-driven, turn-based combat.
Players create and manage a party, assign equipment, learn spells, earn experience, and improve attributes through advancement. The world is divided into outdoor regions and specialized areas, with quests, keys, treasures, trainers, and dungeon puzzles providing progression. Combat choices include physical attacks, defensive actions, spellcasting, and item use.
Plan your run
Create a balanced party with durable front-line fighters, dependable healing, and several sources of magical utility. Keep spare weapons, armor, food, and recovery items, because long expeditions can exhaust resources.
Map every dungeon carefully and record locked doors, traps, fountains, trainers, and one-way passages. Save before entering unfamiliar areas, and return to town regularly to heal, restock, train, and identify or replace equipment.
Meet the cast
A legendary figure whose disappearance and fate are central to the wider mystery surrounding Varn.
A major antagonist whose actions drive the conflict investigated by the adventuring party.
Before you begin
Map dungeon intersections and mark exits, traps, and teleporters.
Use spell points carefully; physical attacks are valuable against weaker groups.
Train and upgrade equipment before tackling areas with noticeably stronger enemies.
Might and Magic: Secret of the Inner Sanctum is a first-person fantasy role-playing game developed by New World Computing and adapted for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The player forms a party of adventurers and explores the lands of Varn while investigating the mysterious Inner Sanctum and the conflict between Corak and Sheltem. Exploration, turn-based battles, character development, equipment, and spell management are central to play. The NES version translates the computer original into a controller-based format with towns, outdoor areas, dungeons, and maze-like interiors. Its large world and detailed party systems were ambitious for a console RPG, although the interface and navigation can feel demanding. It remains historically important as an early console adaptation of a substantial Western computer role-playing game.
