How it plays
The player guides Master Higgins from left to right through short, obstacle-filled stages. Objectives include reaching the goal, defeating enemies, collecting fruit to maintain stamina, and finding better weapons or temporary items.
Stages contain pits, moving platforms, hazards, and boss encounters. Players can run, jump, crouch, attack, and use special equipment such as a skateboard when available. Checkpoints and item pickups provide limited recovery, while the life and stamina systems make careful movement important.
Plan your run
Keep Master Higgins fed by collecting fruit and avoid unnecessary collisions, since stamina is central to survival. Learn the placement of pits and moving hazards before rushing through a stage.
Use ranged weapons to remove enemies from a safe distance, but do not sacrifice control for a temporary power-up. Save reliable equipment for difficult enemy groups and boss approaches.
Meet the cast
The playable hero, traveling across the islands to rescue Tina and defeat the enemies blocking his path.
Master Higgins’s companion and the person he sets out to rescue.
Before you begin
Prioritize fruit when stamina is low; reaching a goal with depleted stamina is dangerous.
Use the skateboard carefully around pits and narrow platforms.
Explore safe-looking routes for weapon and recovery items, but avoid risky detours when near the end of a stage.
New Adventure Island is a side-scrolling platform game developed and published by Hudson Soft for the PC Engine. It follows Master Higgins as he crosses dangerous island environments to rescue Tina from the series’ recurring threats. The game combines running, jumping, weapon throwing, food collection, and fast reactions with a traditional stage-by-stage structure. Its colorful presentation and straightforward controls fit the established Adventure Island formula while adding PC Engine audiovisual polish. The game is generally regarded as a solid later entry, especially for players who enjoy demanding classic platformers, although its limited continues and strict stamina system can make progress unforgiving.
