Players choose plays, snap the ball, run or pass, control defenders, tackle, and manage downs, field position, and the clock. The game supports head-to-head competition and uses the SNES controller to combine play selection with direct control during the action.

Read the down and distance before choosing a play, mix runs with passes, and protect the ball when a defender closes. On defense, cover the likely route while keeping support near the line, and save or record season or tournament progress when supported.
