How it plays

How does Ninja Gaiden play?

Players guide Ryu through six acts made up of multiple side-scrolling stages. The objective is to reach each boss while defeating enemies, avoiding hazards, and using platforms, ladders, and walls to advance.

Ryu attacks with his Dragon Sword and can collect secondary weapons that consume spirit points. He can jump, crouch, climb ladders, and cling to certain walls. Checkpoints, limited lives, continues, and act bosses define progression; cutscenes advance the story between major stages.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Ninja Gaiden?

Learn enemy placement rather than rushing. Many opponents reappear when Ryu moves back across the screen, so clear threats carefully and avoid unnecessary retreats.

Save secondary-weapon points for bosses, use wall positions to control difficult jumps, and prioritize safe landings over speed. Checkpoint sections are often easier when approached with full health and a stocked weapon.
