How it plays
The game uses a side-view perspective across a sequence of scrolling stages divided into acts. Ryu must reach each stage's end, survive hazards and enemies, and defeat a boss before continuing the story.
Players move, jump, attack with the Dragon Sword, cling to walls, and spend collected spiritual points on sub-weapons. Certain stages introduce moving platforms, vertical routes, wind effects, and other environmental hazards. Ryu can also be joined by shadow images that mirror his attacks, improving offensive coverage. Lives, continues, health items, and weapon upgrades support progression, while checkpoint design makes each act a series of demanding encounters.
Plan your run
Learn enemy placement rather than rushing through every screen. Attack from safe distances, use walls to control your position, and preserve sub-weapon points for enemies or bosses that are difficult to approach with the sword.
Treat checkpoints as practice opportunities. Keep a strong weapon whenever possible, watch the movement of platforms and wind, and avoid taking unnecessary damage before boss rooms. Shadow images are especially valuable when several enemies approach from different heights.

Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos is a side-scrolling action-platform game developed and published by Tecmo for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It follows ninja Ryu Hayabusa as he confronts Ashtar and the forces gathering around the Dark Sword of Chaos after the events of the first game. Play centers on precise jumps, wall movement, sword attacks, and frequent use of sub-weapons. Its cinematic cutscenes continue the series' distinctive presentation between stages. The game was widely regarded as a strong NES sequel, with more elaborate graphics, faster pacing, and expanded mechanics, although its difficulty remains demanding. It is remembered as one of the system's notable action games.
