How it plays
The game uses a side-view perspective. Ryu advances through linear stages, defeats enemies, avoids hazards, climbs or jumps across platforms, and reaches a boss at the end of each area.
Ryu can attack with his sword, jump, crouch, cling to some walls, and use secondary weapons when he has sufficient spirit points. The campaign follows a fixed sequence of stages, with cutscenes between major sections and limited continues supporting repeated attempts.
Plan your run
Learn enemy placement and hazard timing rather than rushing every screen. Keep Ryu near safe footing before attacking, and use wall movement to control difficult jumps.
Conserve spirit points for bosses or dense enemy formations. Study each boss's attack cycle, use repeated short attacks when safe, and treat every continue as an opportunity to memorize the next section.

Expect the international NES version to be especially difficult compared with the Japanese release.
Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom is a side-scrolling action platformer developed and published by Tecmo for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It stars ninja Ryu Hayabusa, who investigates the apparent death of Irene Lew and becomes involved in a conspiracy surrounding a mysterious ancient vessel. The game combines precise jumping, sword combat, wall movement, and trap-filled stage design. Its campaign is divided into lengthy stages with boss encounters and a steadily escalating challenge. The NES version was noted for its fast pace, strong presentation, cinematic storytelling, and notably demanding difficulty, especially outside Japan. It is generally regarded as an ambitious but challenging conclusion to the original NES trilogy.
