Directional movement uses the Game Boy Control Pad.
How it plays
The game is viewed from a side-scrolling perspective. Ryu progresses through a linear series of stages, defeats regular enemies, avoids hazards, and reaches a boss at the end of each area.
Players can jump, attack with the Dragon Sword, climb or leap between walls, and collect secondary weapons and power-ups. Lives and continues support repeated attempts, but there is no character-leveling system or branching campaign.
Plan your run
Learn enemy attack timing instead of rushing through each screen. Use wall movement to control difficult jumps and create safer attack angles.
Save secondary weapons for bosses or crowded sections, and prioritize recognizing stage layouts after each defeat. Approach bosses cautiously and attack during their recovery windows.

Before you begin
Use the sword from a safe distance whenever the stage layout allows it.
Study enemy placement before committing to a jump.
Reserve secondary weapons for bosses and dense enemy groups.
Ninja Gaiden Shadow is a side-scrolling action platformer developed by Natsume and published by Tecmo for the Game Boy in 1991. It follows ninja Ryu Hayabusa as he fights through enemy-held stages and confronts a supernatural threat. The game adapts the series' fast combat and acrobatic movement to the monochrome handheld, using shorter stages and a more compact presentation than the console entries. Its play style combines sword attacks, jumps, wall movement, and limited-use secondary weapons. Contemporary and later reception has generally recognized its responsive controls and technical quality, while also noting its demanding difficulty and small-screen limitations.
