How it plays

How does Paper Mario play?

The game uses a mostly top-down exploration perspective. Mario travels between towns, fields, dungeons, and Bowser's castle, solving environmental puzzles, finding Star Pieces, collecting badges, and progressing through a sequence of story chapters.

Battles are turn-based. Mario and one partner choose attacks, items, badges, or Star Spirit abilities, while Action Commands reward correctly timed button presses. Experience points raise Mario's level; each level grants a choice of increasing maximum HP, FP, or BP, allowing different badge-focused builds.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Paper Mario?

Explore each area thoroughly before leaving. Hidden blocks, Star Pieces, badges, and optional favors often reward checking suspicious walls, corners, and elevated paths.

Use partners according to enemy weaknesses, conserve FP for reliable special attacks, and adjust badges before major fights. Action Commands are especially important against bosses, so practice timing on ordinary enemies rather than spending items unnecessarily.
