How it plays
The player views a tall, two-dimensional grid from the front and controls a cursor that moves a pair of adjacent blocks. Sliding the pair left or right can create horizontal or vertical matches of three or more identical blocks. Matched blocks disappear, the blocks above fall, and chain reactions award higher scores and can attack an opponent.
Story mode follows Ash through a series of opponents and difficulty levels. Versus mode supports competitive play, while timed and endurance-style challenges test speed and survival. Later stages introduce faster block movement and more demanding patterns; the optional 3D mode presents the same basic matching idea on a rotating cylindrical playfield.
Plan your run
Look for chains before making the first match. A match that drops blocks into another match is usually more valuable than an immediate isolated clear.
Keep the stack low and avoid filling the center of the field. In competitive play, build chains safely, watch the opponent's rising blocks, and use quick clears when a dangerous stack leaves little room to recover.

Before you begin

In versus play, prioritize survival when the opponent sends a large block attack.
Pokémon Puzzle League is a competitive action-puzzle game developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64. It combines the match-three mechanics of the Puzzle League series with characters and presentation from the Pokémon animated series. Players arrange colored blocks in a vertical playfield, creating matches by sliding pieces horizontally rather than dropping individual pieces. The game includes story-driven single-player challenges, versus play, timed modes, and a three-dimensional puzzle mode. Its accessible rules and increasingly demanding stages made it a well-regarded console puzzle game, particularly among Pokémon fans, while its later challenges provide substantial depth for experienced players.
