How it plays

How does Puyo Puyo play?

Puyos fall in pairs from the top of a vertical field. Move and rotate each pair, then drop it into position. Four or more connected Puyos of one color disappear, and falling pieces can create additional links.

In the one-player mode, clear successive opponent stages while managing the height of your field. Chains generate nuisance, or garbage, Puyos for the opposing side. Two-player competition uses the same rules, with each player trying to force the other to overflow the playfield.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Puyo Puyo?

Build chains by leaving spaces for falling Puyos to connect instead of clearing every group immediately.

Watch the top of your field carefully. A smaller reliable chain is often safer than a large setup that leaves no room for the next pair.

In versus play, send nuisance Puyos after preparing a chain, then use the resulting pressure to limit the opponent's placement options.

Meet the cast

Who are the key characters?

1

Arle Nadja

The playable heroine and the central character of the single-player scenario.

2

Carbuncle

Arle's small companion, closely associated with her in the series' early presentation.

3

Satan

A major opposing character encountered near the end of the single-player progression.

Before you begin

What should you know before playing?

  1. 1

Keep the center columns low so incoming pairs remain maneuverable.

  2. 2

Plan at least one connection before dropping a pair; random clearing usually produces weak attacks.

  3. 3

In two-player games, observe the opponent's field and attack when it is already high.
