How it plays
R-Type III is viewed from the side. The objective is to survive each stage, destroy enemy formations and defensive mechanisms, and defeat a large boss at the end of the level. The ship can move freely within the screen area, fire standard shots, and charge a more powerful wave attack.
The Force unit can be attached to the ship or launched independently, allowing the player to attack from different positions and block some incoming hazards. Different Force types change the available attack patterns. Progression comes from learning fixed enemy placements, preserving the Force, and improving shot timing rather than from character levels or equipment shops.
Plan your run
Learn enemy entrances and boss patterns instead of rushing through unfamiliar sections. Keep the Force positioned where it can attack while also protecting the ship, and charge the Wave Cannon during safe stretches rather than holding the button continuously.
Choose the Force configuration that best matches the stage layout. Small movements are usually safer than large evasive sweeps, and memorizing where enemies appear is essential because collisions and projectiles can quickly consume the limited lives.

R-Type III: The Third Lightning is a horizontally scrolling shoot-'em-up developed and published by Irem for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The player pilots the R-9Ø through hostile installations, asteroid fields, and alien defenses while confronting the Bydo threat. Its defining play style combines precise ship movement with the detachable Force unit, charged wave attacks, and selectable Force types. The game is structured as a demanding sequence of stages rather than a broad adventure or story-driven campaign. Contemporary and later players have generally praised its detailed graphics, aggressive enemy patterns, and strong soundtrack, while also noting its high difficulty and limited margin for error. It is widely regarded as one of the SNES's strongest traditional shooters.
