How it plays
The game is viewed from the side. Ristar moves through sequential platforming stages, using his arms to grab enemies, pull himself toward fixed points, collect objects, and attack targets from a distance.
Each world contains several action stages followed by a boss encounter. Progress depends on reaching the goal, surviving hazards, finding routes through platforms, and using environmental objects effectively. Ristar can jump, cling to selected surfaces, and use momentum from grabs to cross gaps.
Plan your run
Learn the range and timing of Ristar’s arms before rushing through a stage. Many enemies and hazards can be handled safely from a distance, and grabbing objects often provides a more reliable route than ordinary jumping.
Explore side paths when practical, but prioritize safe landings and health recovery. Before each boss, identify its attack cycle and save room to retreat rather than staying directly underneath it.

Ristar: The Shooting Star is a 2D platform game developed and published by Sega for the Game Gear in 1995. It stars Ristar, a young anthropomorphic star whose extendable arms are central to both combat and movement. Players travel through themed stages, defeat enemies, collect items, and confront bosses while helping restore peace to the Valdi system. The Game Gear edition adapts the ideas of the larger console release into shorter, more compact areas designed for the handheld screen. It is remembered for responsive grabbing mechanics, colorful presentation, and imaginative stage themes, although its smaller scale and limited audio are distinct from the Mega Drive version.
