How it plays
Joe Musashi advances through side-scrolling stages filled with soldiers, creatures, traps, and boss encounters. The main objective is to reach the end of each area while defeating enemies and avoiding hazards.
Players move, jump, attack, and use available weapons or ninja techniques. Progression is stage-based: completing an area leads to the next section, with stronger enemies and larger threats appearing later. The Game Gear version is designed primarily for single-player action.
Plan your run
Use distance and timing rather than rushing into groups of enemies. Clear threats before jumping across hazards, and watch enemy attack patterns so that jumps and strikes are deliberate.
Conserve special techniques for difficult encounters or bosses. The small screen can hide approaching enemies, so advance carefully and keep Joe positioned where he can react quickly.

Shinobi for Game Gear is a side-scrolling action game developed and published by Sega. Players control Joe Musashi, a modern ninja sent to fight through enemy-controlled areas and rescue kidnapped children. The game combines close-range attacks, thrown weapons, jumping, and limited ninja magic in compact stages designed for the handheld screen. Its play style follows the action-platform conventions of Sega's arcade-era ninja games, but the Game Gear version presents its own simplified structure and presentation. Reception was generally favorable for bringing fast ninja combat to a portable system, although the reduced screen size and hardware limitations make the experience less expansive than the arcade original.
