How it plays
The game alternates between a top-down world map or town scenes and turn-based battles on square tactical fields.
Players move the party, inspect locations, recruit or meet allies, buy equipment, and begin story battles. During combat, units can move, attack, cast magic, use items, or perform support actions. Victory usually requires defeating the opposing force, while losing the protagonist ends the battle.
Experience improves characters and can lead to class promotion, giving the army stronger statistics and new capabilities as the campaign advances.
Plan your run
Protect Nick and other fragile units by keeping them behind tougher allies until enemy movement has been measured.

Shining Force II: The Sword of Hajya is a fantasy tactical role-playing game developed by Climax Entertainment and published by Sega for the Game Gear. It follows the young Prince Nick as he becomes involved in a conflict surrounding the sacred sword Hajya and the kingdom of Cypress. The game combines overhead exploration with grid-based, turn-based battles in which each unit has a class, movement range, and specialized abilities. Its campaign is a compact handheld adaptation of the Shining Force formula, emphasizing battles and party development over lengthy exploration. Contemporary and later reception has generally recognized it as an ambitious, well-designed strategy RPG for the Game Gear, although its smaller scale and simplified presentation distinguish it from the console entries.
