How it plays
Explore towns, dungeons, and regional maps while deciding which events and conflicts to address. The world opens through scenario choices, territorial victories, and the development of Avalon.
Combat is turn-based. Select commands for the party, exploit weapon and elemental weaknesses, learn new techniques through glimmers, and use formations to shape offense and defense. Characters can lose Life Points permanently when incapacitated.
Generational succession is central: the current emperor eventually gives way to another ruler, and the player continues the campaign with a new party. Research facilities, classes, and conquered regions provide long-term progression.

Save before major scenario decisions and difficult dungeons.
Watch LP totals closely, since repeated incapacitation can permanently remove a character.
Experiment with different generations instead of trying to complete every event with one party.
Romancing SaGa 2 is a turn-based role-playing game developed and published by Square for the Super Famicom. The player guides the rulers of the kingdom of Avalon across several generations, defending the realm from the Seven Heroes while expanding its territory and institutions. Rather than following a single fixed party, the game combines open-ended exploration with Imperial Succession: when a ruler falls or retires, a new emperor inherits abilities, resources, and political responsibilities. Battles use command selection, weapon and spell development, formations, and the LP system. Its unusual structure, difficult encounters, and freedom of approach earned it a strong reputation in Japan, although its original release remained less familiar to Western players for many years.
