How it plays
The game uses a two-dimensional well viewed from the front. Groups of three colored gems fall vertically, and the player rotates or moves them before they land. Matching three or more gems of the same color horizontally, vertically, or diagonally clears them.
Single-player play is organized around battles against Flower Division members, while multiplayer supports direct competition. Clearing gems quickly, creating chains, and sending nuisance pieces to the opponent's field are central to winning. Matches become harder as the opponent's field fills, and character-specific presentation frames the otherwise arcade-like puzzle action.
Plan your run
Prioritize safe clears near the bottom of the field rather than building a tall stack. Watch the next falling group and keep multiple colors available so that one placement does not block every possible match.
Chains are more valuable than isolated clears because they create pressure and can recover a crowded field. Before starting a chain, leave room for the gems needed to continue it; rushing a rotation often creates an unrecoverable column.
In versus play, defend immediately when nuisance pieces are approaching. A small clear that prevents the field from sealing is usually better than delaying for a larger attack.

Editorial context
A focused Saturn puzzle spin-off that pairs Columns mechanics with Sakura Wars character presentation.
Its competitive matches are easy to understand but reward careful stacking and chain planning.
Sakura Wars: Hanagumi Taisen Columns is a competitive falling-block puzzle game developed by Red Company and published by Sega for the Sega Saturn. It combines the color-matching rules of Columns with the cast, conversations, and dramatic presentation of Sakura Wars. Players choose members of the Flower Division and compete in single-player or versus-style matches, clearing gems to build pressure on an opponent. The game was well received in Japan as a focused character spin-off, particularly for its faithful cast presentation and accessible puzzle system. Its appeal depends more on tactical competition and Sakura Wars fan service than on a new adventure campaign.
