How it plays
How does SimCity play?
Players move a cursor over a top-down map and use the construction menus to zone land, place roads, build power infrastructure, and add civic facilities. Residential, commercial, and industrial areas develop when connected to power and transportation, but pollution, traffic, crime, and taxes affect growth.
The main mode is an ongoing city simulation with selectable terrain and difficulty settings. Scenario goals introduce emergencies or demanding conditions. Successful development increases the population and tax base, unlocking more room and funds for expansion; poor planning can cause decline, debt, or disasters.
Plan your run
What is the best way to play SimCity?
Begin with a compact settlement rather than spreading zones across the map. Connect every developed area to a power source and use roads or rail to keep traffic manageable.
Keep residential zones separated from heavy industry, reserve space for future expansion, and monitor the budget before buying expensive civic buildings. Respond to disasters quickly, but avoid exhausting funds on facilities the population cannot yet support.
Before you begin
What should you know before playing?
- 1
Start with modest zoning and expand after tax income becomes reliable.
- 2
Place industrial areas away from housing to limit pollution.
- 3
Use the budget and map information screens regularly to identify traffic and service problems.
