Space Squash

How it plays
The player controls a laser cannon near the bottom of a single-screen playfield. Move horizontally beneath the alien formation and fire upward to destroy invaders before they reach the ground.
Levels progress through repeated waves with changing enemy patterns and increasing pressure. Players can use defensive shields for temporary protection, but enemy shots and descending formations gradually wear them down. The compilation format provides multiple Space Invaders-style variations rather than a large exploration map or character-based campaign.
Plan your run
Stay near the center when a wave begins so the cannon can respond quickly to both sides. Clear invaders from the lower rows first, because they create the greatest immediate threat as the formation descends.
Use shields selectively and keep moving after firing. Removing columns efficiently can open safer firing lanes, while controlled shots help avoid wasting opportunities during faster waves.
Before you begin
Prioritize the lowest surviving invaders before chasing high-value targets.
Use the Virtual Boy depth effect carefully; short play sessions can reduce eye strain.
Watch the formation's horizontal rhythm and move before it reaches the edge.
Space Invaders: Virtual Collection is a fixed-screen shoot 'em up compilation developed and published by Taito for Nintendo's Virtual Boy. It brings the classic Space Invaders formula to a stereoscopic handheld display, challenging the player to defend against descending alien formations while clearing successive waves. The collection focuses on arcade-style scoring, simple controls, and increasingly intense attack patterns rather than a story-driven campaign. Its Virtual Boy presentation gives the familiar playfield a sense of depth, although the monochrome red display and limited hardware shape the overall experience. Released in Japan in 1995, the game is regarded primarily as a historical curiosity for Virtual Boy owners and Space Invaders enthusiasts. Its appeal comes from preserving the series' foundational design in a compact compilation format.
